“I believe that the massive inequities in our public education system deprive many children of the tools that are necessary for a happy, healthy and productive life. Perhaps the toughest challenge facing our country is figuring out how to fundamentally transform public education to provide all children with these basic building blocks. I am committed to playing whatever role I can to help ensure that our public education system prepares all children to live enriching lives.”

Mark Kleger-Heine is the chief operating officer of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools, a nonprofit organization launched by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to serve, support and manage public schools in the city. Kleger-Heine joined the Partnership after four years at McKinsey & Company, the global management consulting firm. At McKinsey, he counseled senior executives in nonprofit and government organizations, as well as large biotech and medical device companies. Prior to joining The Broad Residency, Kleger-Heine was the deputy director of Project GRAD Los Angeles in the northeast San Fernando Valley. He also has worked in several community-based nonprofit organizations operating in partnership with public schools. Kleger-Heine began his career teaching math to fourth-, sixth-, eighth- and ninth-graders in Brooklyn, N.Y. Kleger-Heine holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Yale University, a master's of public administration from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University, and a master's of business administration from Columbia Business School. Kleger-Heine participated in The Broad Residency in Urban Education Cohort 2008, serving his two-year Residency at the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools.
